Rare Antique 1800s Silk Maltese Lace Shawl or Mantilla, it is truly stunning and without any hole, moth damage or age marks. It's condition is exquisite.
The silk has been very intricately hand woven with alternate panels of flowers and the Maltese Cross, within finely worked and exquisitely slightly raised lace. This is a beautiful and substantial shawl, and as far as I know has never been used It's quite rare to find one of such a size and in such a good condition. I’m told that it was originally made for the edging of a wedding dress hem, then adapted to form a long lavish stole to be worn over a bustle.
It was passed to me in the early 70s, previously a family heirloom and it's remained in a linen store since this date.
This stunningly beautiful and precious lady originates from Northern France and was made in the late 1800s by relatives from Southern Spain.
The measurements are;
Length; 125”
Width; 14”
Such a wonderful fabric should be seen and shown off, that's why I'm selling as previously it was part of my collection of heirloom linen and lace which dates from the early 1700s.
It would be the perfect vintage accessory, or an indulgent treat for an avid collector.
The lace has always been very well stored since it was made, in a well ventilated store room, it’s museum quality at its best.
